  • black pepper to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne
  • 1 large carrot
  • 1 rib celery
  • 8 cups water
  • 2 cups split peas (green lentils)
  • 1 small onion
  • 4 teaspoons thyme
  • 3 teaspoons basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili power

Start heating the water to boil, add in everything else. Boil vigorously for 20 minutes. Reduce heat, cover and simmer until the split peas are tender, at least another 40 minutes, and for as long as you like. Mash up, press through sieve, or blend. Reheat just to boiling point.
