Heat an electric oven to 200 degrees F for about 10 minutes and then turn off. Place yeast in a small bowl. Stir in white sugar and 1/2 cup of lukewarm water. Stir and let rise on top of the warm stove for 10 to 15 minutes. Add the flour into an oven safe bowl and place it into the warm oven uncovered, stirring it occasionally to ensure it is warm all through. Add the brown sugar to a large bowl with the shortening. Add 1 cup of hot water to melt the sugar and shortening then gradually add 1 more cup of cold water (ensuring it stays warm). Stir in 4 tsp of salt. Using another pre-warmed and greased, oven safe bowl, put the dough in the bowl and place in the warm oven to rise covering with a damp cloth. Leave for about 1 hour. Your dough should double in size. Once the dough is double in size, kneed it to remove air bubbles, then warm up the oven again. Shape the dough into loaves or rolls and place the dough in the greased pans. Dampen the top of the bread to keep it from drying out. Prick the top of the bread a couple of times to get the air bubbles out. Let rise in a warm oven for 30-60 min, until double in size. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Bake rolls for approx. 12-14 mins and bread for approx. 20 mins. When finished, cover tops of bread with butter to make it golden brown.
