Peel potatoes, if you like some skin leave some. Boil whole potato until soft on the inside, about 20-25 on medium high heat. Salt water really well. Once done move them to bowl add butter. Let this sit for 15 minutes. Use a good potato masher or metal spachala and roughly mash them. Add cream and butter salt. Let them sit for 10 minutes. Mash a little more. If dry slowly add milk until if the right consistency. Don't over mash them. The secret to great mashed potatoes,is letting the butter and cream rest. Give them patient love. Potatoes cool slowly so do not worry about getting too cold.
