  • 3 t shortening
  • dumplings:
  • 1 cup carrots thinly sliced
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1/2 tsp celery seed
  • 1 1/2 lb chicken shredded
  • 32 oz chicken broth (i use much more)
  • 1/8 tsp saffron threads
  • thicken with 1/2 cup milk 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 1/2 cup sifted flour

1. Saute carrots, onion, celery with seasonings until tender. Add broth and shredded chicken. 2. Thicken with thickening mixture. 3. For the dumplings: Sift dry ingredients, cut in shortening. Stir in milk until blended. 4. Drop by spoonfuls into the stew. Cook 10 min with kettle covered and 10 without.
