This is a mashup of barbecue sauces from the original Joy of Cooking ( deleted in current editions.) It walks back from the sweet, sweet sauces of today to a more tangy Carolina-style sauce. Especially good on bird.

Chop the onions finely. Saute until brown in fat or oil.
Combine remaining ingredients. Add to onions (or vice versa.) Simmer 20-30 minutes.
