In a large bowl, sprinkle sugar & yeast over warm water and let sit for about 5 minutes. Stir in salt. Mix in flour and knead to make a soft, smooth dough. Don't let rise. Cut into small pieces. Roll pencil-thin ropes and twist into pretzel shapes. Place on foil-lined cookie sheet that's been dusted with flour. Brush on egg and sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake at 400 for about 15 minutes or until lightly browned.
