I have experimented with many recipes for French Toast; this one gives me consistently the best results. One thick slice of bread per serving

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 pinch nutmeg
  • 2 teaspoons butter
  • maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon grand marnier
  • 2 slices thickly cut white bread or challah bread
  • confectioners sugar

In a medium bowl, beat eggs well. Whisk in milk, Grand Marnier, cinnamon, vanilla extract, salt and nutmeg. Pour mixture into a flat container that can hold two slices of bread. In a large skillet, melt 1 tsp of butter over medium heat. Dip two slices of bread in egg mixture, soak about 30 seconds on each side. Place slices side by side in the skillet and once the bottom side is browned, lift from the skillet, melt another tsp of butter, turn the slices over to brown the other side (about 2 minutes each side). Remove to a plate. Dust each piece of toast with confectioners sugar. Serve with warm maple syrup or fruit compote.
