I brought this recipe with me from England when I moved here many years ago! It's always a hit! I prepare it according to the recipe or fold in a cup of blueberries as an optional addition with the walnuts. (Do not overmix)!

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup nuts chopped
  • 1/4 cup margarine
  • 1 cup mashed ripe banana
  • 1 8-ounce package cream cheese softened
  • 1 cup blueberries (optional)

Combine cream cheese, sugar and margarine, mixing until well blended. Beat in banana and eggs. Add remaining ingredients except nuts and (optional) blueberries, mixing just until moistened. Fold in nuts and blueberries (if used). Pour into greased 9x5-inch loaf pan. Bake at 350 F for 1 hour and 10 minutes or until wooden pick inserted near center comes out clean. Do not overbake! Cool and then remove from pan. Cut into slices and store in an airtight container.
