This is a bread recipe I got when I was at a touch for health conference in Wichita Kansas. It is excellent bread with many, many variations. (Riordin Center in Kansas)

  • 1 tbs salt
  • 4 cups hot water
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 5 cups whole wheat flour
  • 3 tbs yeast
  • 3/4 cup sugar up to 1 cup
  • 6 cups unbleached flour
  • 1/3 cup ground flax seeds

In a large bowl add oil, yeast, sugar, hot water, let activate. Add remaining ingredients to yeast mixture and mix well. Knead 5-8 minutes until smooth and elastic, adding more flour as needed. Let rise until double (1 - 1 1/2 hours). Punch down and make into loaves or rolls. Let rise until almost double in size. Bake loaves at 350 degrees for 40 minutes or until golden brown and when poked it springs back. Other Bread Options: Dill Cheese Bread Multi Seed Bread 1 cup Cheddar Cheese 1/3 cup Pumpkin, sunflower, sesame seeds 4 TBS Dill Garlic Bread Multi Nut Bread 4 TBS Garlic 1/3 cup Pecan, Cashews, ground almonds Oatmeal Poppy Seed Bread Loaded Bread 1 cup Oatmeal 1 cup cranberries 1/3 cup poppy seeds 1/4 cup pecans, cashews, ground almonds a little less flour pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds Maple Walnut Bread Cinnamon Raisin Bread 3 3/4 cups water 1 cup raisins 1 cup maple in yeast 4 TBS Cinnamon 2 TBS Maple Flavoring 7 cups Unbleached Flour 1 cup walnuts 4 cups Whole Wheat Flour Honey Pecan 3 3/4 cup water 1 cup honey 1 cup toasted chopped pecans Note: Maple, Walnut, Honey Pecan, Honey Whole Wheat may need more flour. Oatmeal poppy seed may need less flour
